On allopurinol for 30 days and uric acid went up?

Doctor started me on allopurinol at 100mg to start. All liver andkidney function tests looked good at one month on, however, my uricacid level was at 9.1? This is up from around 8 range. Obviouslyexpecting doctor to raise dosage but felt some improvement even ifslight would be noticed after starting. Any advice on why thisreading is going up instead of down?

I’d have a nice steak sandwich..OR a roast beef dinner and acouple cold beers and not worry about it..

Blood uric acid levels can go wacky when starting allopurinol..theallopurinol will start slowing down the bodies natural production ofuric acid(85 to 95% of the uric acid.).READ 85 to 95% of the goutproblem. The body likes to attempt to regulate this. The level couldhave risen because your body has or is reclaiming more uric acid atit’s LAST stage before disposal..not likely.MOST likely is that LESSuric acid is being made..i/e allowed to get into the joints..and theuric acid in the joints/area..is starting to head back to thebloodstream to get filterred out.SOoo instead of that extra uric acidbeing in the joints where it DOES NOT belong..it is back in thebloodstream to get filtered out/disposed of..

Your doctor may even not like this level this high and mayincrease the allo. This could take even more of the natural uric acidproduction off line and this could lower the level..

The level will come down..the allo may need to be adjusted to keepit at a certain level..

This is EXACTLY the same principle as when people have attacks andthe level is TOO LOW..fooling the DR.s..the level is low.at THATpoint because most of the uric acid is IN THE JOINT area..a sharp Dr.will see this low level..and get another test when the atack is overand see the level rising..then maybe falling again as more uric acidheads for the hills(joints).Sometimes they test the joint fluid foru/a level. Not just crystals..

Some Dr’s look at the blood u/a level every month..every couplemonths..some every 6 months.

Thanks Arnold, I was eagerly awaiting your reply. I was hoping thismight be the situation, Doc bumped me to 200mg daily and will re-check uric acid again in 30 days. Since starting have noticed littletwinges in ankle but no full blown attacks. My prophylaxis is 400mgibuprofen in a.m. and 400 in p.m., increased as necessary whenfeeling the “twinge”. In addition to uric acid doc checkedCBC,creatinine, potassium,SGOT and SGPT. My creatinine was at 1.4which may be high for some but mine is always between 1.3 to 1.8with 1.5 being my normal. Hopefully with the increased dose Icontinue with no problems, will keep you posted.
