Booze and gout, etc.
Booze doesn’t contain purines and that’s not why folks with gout should never drink alcohol — that’s a mistaken impression. Booze inhibits the elimination of uric acid, which is why it is poison to the gout sufferer. Secondly, the only meats that contain sodium notrite are processed luncheon meats, e.g., bologna, salami, ham, bacon, etc. There would appear to be no connection between sodium nitrites and purines, so far as I know. Somebody know about a connection I am not aware of? It is the purines in the meat products themselves that are the culprits, not sodium nitrite, NegevoliDo you Yahoo!?Yahoo! Yes.
Consider however:Would you drink methylbutane thiol, the activeingredient of a skunk’s defense mechanism?Well, if you’ve ever had a cold beer in a frosty mugon a hot summer afternoon, you have done exactly that!
Would you drink ‘putrescine’ and ‘cadaverine’?Well, if you drink wine, particularly an importedSpanish wine thats exactly what you are doing.
Its those minute, trace compounds that can besignificant. And particularly any bottom fermentedbeer will make gout worse. Trace amounts ofmycological products seem to be quite potent.
Remember, gout may often be related to uric acidlevels and uric acid crystals but that is oftenbecause there is no further investigation into suchthings as infectious agents or why so many people havehigh uric acid levels but do not get gout.
I’m really not interested in any sort of poll fromsubscribers, but I daresay we would find quite a fewvictims of cat bites on this listserve.
Not quite true. Corned beef or mutton would beextremely high in nitrites even though not classifiedas a luncheon meat.
Sustained anecdotal evidence from gout sufferers seemsto indicate a connection.
