Allopurinol vs. probenecid
Anyone know the numbers on hypoexcreters (probenecid takers) versushyperexcreters (allopurinol users)? My doc wants to go straight toallopurinol, and claims probenecid is “extinct”. Also, what are thetypical dosages for allopurinol. He wants to start at 300 mg, myimpression was you started lower and worked up.

I take probenecid. Allopurinol didn’t help me a bit, I had an attackwhile on this medication. According to my doctor (if I remebercorrectly), there are 2 types of gout: 1. You overproduce uric acid(diet or genetics), or 2. You cannot get rid easily of uric acid. Iam the second type, and probenecid is working fine.
I don’t know if your doctor is a specialist. I am now seeing arheumatologist and he was the one that introduce me to probenecid. Not all medications work for everyone, and you have to go for themedicine that helps you.
I am taking 250mg of probenecid twice a day

Probenecid still has a place, though it is not often used.Benzbromarone is a more potent uricosuric. I agree with you aboutallopurinol - I almost always

I used allopurinol for about 3 years with great success, but itstoped working. I asked my doc why and he had no reason why itshould. I asked him to put me on probenecid, and it is better, but Istill have symptoms. I am now adding cholticine, and a shot of applecider vinigar. I guess we will see if that helps.
