I take probenecid. Allopurinol didn't help me a bit, I had an attackwhile on this medication. According to my doctor (if I remebercorrectly), there are 2 types of gout: 1. You overproduce uric acid(diet or genetics), or 2. You cannot get rid easily of uric acid. Iam the second type, and probenecid is working fine.

I don't know if your doctor is a specialist. I am now seeing arheumatologist and he was the one that introduce me to probenecid. Not all medications work for everyone, and you have to go for themedicine that helps you.

I am taking 250mg of probenecid twice a day

I used allopurinol for about 3 years with great success, but itstoped working. I asked my doc why and he had no reason why itshould. I asked him to put me on probenecid, and it is better, but Istill have symptoms. I am now adding cholticine, and a shot of applecider vinigar. I guess we will see if that helps.
