What works
I had my first attack 2 years ago which was controlled withVoltaren and Allopurinol. After 6 months my doctor reccommended with an adequate diet i couldcut out Allo……..so i did and was fine until 2 months ago when ihad an attack.I am currently experiencing an attack where the gout hasspread from my big toe to the next one along. This makes itimpossible to walk at all. The big toe attack came 1 week ago. Itried Gout cure pills which were a waste of time and for 2 days havebeen on Colchisine (3 a day). But the swelling has not gone down 1bit in either joint. How long would one reasonably expect Colchisineto take effect before going back to the doctor and should i betaking it still if it hasn’t worked yet?

I’m sure many will ask why your doctor would advise you to discontinueAllopurinol since it’s really the only thing going right now thatcombats the root of the problem. Possibly your uric acid levels hadreturned to normal or you were having some adverse reaction to thedrug?
I’ve been on colchicine from 3 to 5 days without any immediate reliefduring an attack. Just my experience.

I would get back on the Allupurinol asap, It really is the only way to overcome
this terrible problem we all suffer from, any pauses in attacks are exactly that
they will come back again & again.
I’ve been on allo since July’04 & not had a twinge, despite eating normally (BUT NO ALCOHOL) prior to that i had 10 attacks from jan’04-jun’04. (DURING WHICH NO MEAT,FISH,ALCOHOL ETC)
Regarding taking Colchinne, my understanding is you would usually take about TEN 0.5mg tablets
when under attack (about this point you feel nauseas or have a dodgy stomach & STOP). My rheumy advised
me to take 1 every 4 hours until this point. I would be weary of taking 3 a day for a long period of time.

I like the Indomethicin.I think with the Colchisine you have to take more.

1 gout attack..stay on allo for life.Colchicine..works best whencombined with a nsaid..indo is good.Colchicine..1 in themorning, lunch, and at dinner1 indo at the same time is pretty much themost potent medicine for gout.Sure it’ll WRECK your stomach for awhile. As a rule of thumb..colchicine works BEST SOON!! after theattack starts.HIT the attack AND the colchicine HARD andFAST.DElaying the taking of colchicine..OR taking it too often..oRcontinuing to try and use it for attacks of increasing intensity..itloses it’s punch. The idea is to take it ONLY when you have to..get onthe allo/stay on it..you won’t need the colchicine.

I have been having gout problem for over 12 years I have been on and off alluporinol and the situation do not get any better without it . my advise is to go on allu , reduce in food containing high uric acid , and go on a stress management course as stress aggravate the situation .
