Knees

I have had gout attacks for 9 years. I did not know what washappening and was not diagnosed till 2 weeks ago, when a joint fluidtest came back positive. (Told the doctors a couple of years ago thatI thought it could be gout, but they refused to treat me for the goutbecause they had done the fluid test before and got no crystals.)Right now I am having a major problem because the attacks fill myknees with fluid and I am stuck in bed for a week or more. Once theknees no longer are red and warm I can have the fluid sucked out, andget back on my feet fairly soon. The problem now is the reluctance ofmy doctors to do this. I would do it myself if I could get my handson a 20 gauge syringe (just kidding, kind of). Any suggestions? I wasput on 300mg of Allopurinol and hope it does the trick.

Since its only been two weeks I’d imagine you need to give thatallopurinol a chance…not to mention that 300mg may not be the correctdosage for you? Like all things, I’m sure your doctors want to monitorhow you do on that dosage before adjusting. Unfortunately its a slowprocess with out any immediate fixes. As you probably heard, itspretty rare for anyone to start showing the initial signs of goutoutside of the foot area. The whole build up of fluid is something I’mnot familiar with and just the logical part of me thinks that you mighthave some compounded issues. Sounds like your heading in the rightdirection with your gout. Good luck!
