I would say that this stat. applies to those who go/or have gonethrough gout WITHOUT allopurinol.
At the end state.Initially I think that the pain from gout deterspeople from doing what causes it.I think most people DO modify theirdiet,activity,lifestyle..somewhat..true they may lapse..AND thenblame those lapses on NEW attacks..BUT!historically,factually,empiricallly..I have indeed had these exactconversations with experts,as well as individuals..
There is CLEARLLY a pattern..of people battling gout with EVERYway imagineable..people give up..rightly so..I don’t blame them..whenNOTHING seems to work..and it doesn’t.
In the words of a rhuematologist.First gout attack..second goutattack..filled with a bunch of old wives tales..anecdotaltales..coming at a less than active time in their lives..carrying abit of extra weight..not the best diet..gonna battle..NOT take drugs(allo.) EVERY day for life..make changes..have lapses..before youknow it the guy is even LESS active..then BLAMING the gout onold “sports” injuries..GIVING up the things in life they loved..maybea steak..a few beer..giving up pleasure..next thing you know..anunrelated/untriggered MONSTER attack..and perhaps permanentdamage..sometimes the best treatment is an attack that LEVELS somepeople..and there is NO ROAD home without allopurinol..once on theallo..he CAN eat normally..have a drink if he wants..be moreactive..before you know it..he HAS and can FEEL a normal life..getmore activity/exercise..
I think allopurinol wakes people up..mentally and physically..notjust from experts points of view..BUT personally..anecdotally..peoplethat email me..are on this group..I have seen/read/heard of peoplethat are WAY,WAY more healthy..ON allopurinol..I think that it is WAYhigher than 1 in 5..those that lived deteriorating lives ofsufferring..DO NOT HAVE to live that way anymore..
In terms of the 1 in 5 that deal with this WITHOUT allopurinol..Ivery much doubt that in the end it is anywhere near that high
Knowing what I know now..I am not even sure that I would adviseanyone with gout NOT on allopurinol..to AVOIDPLEASURE..eating/drinking whatever..sure I’ld advise them to monitortheir blood uric acid level..BUT to advise them to give up pleasurewhen it is pretty much known/accepted where they are almostguaranteed to end up ANYWAY..what’s the point?
My VERY FIRST appointment with a rhuematologist..he ADVISED meNOT!! to give up ANYTHING! that gave me pleasure..in regards todrinking,eating,lifestyle,activity..considerring the state that I hadNOW got myself into..crippled..while on snake oil..(MAN OH MAN..OHhow I loved/believed in the ‘ol snake oil)he stated BLUNTLY that itwould make NO difference!
Gotta pay heed and respect ANYONE in the medical profession thatDOES NOT! tell you to lay off the beer and steaks..

This gout thing is just such a broad topic that seems to effect so manypeople at some many different stages of health. I’m sure it’s MOSTcommon for those overweight to deal with the gout monster for the firsttime and I was no exception to this rule. What I find odd/stupid isthat it took me two years of VERY frequent attacks to finally dosomething, other then carry a huge sack of herbal crap aroundeverywhere. There is no doubt in my mind that when the body reachesits limit of manageable weight that all kinds of things start goingwrong. I’ve come a long way in just under 6 months from when I started(diet/exercise) but its only the beggining of the rest of my life. Forthose that still haven’t come to that bridge, don’t wait around tilyour body delivers the next telegram.
