Pardon the impertinance but, how was the diagnosis made?Bloot test, was fluid removed from the joint? Were birefringantcrystals identified?

Gout in a pre-menopausal femele is very rare and in a 21 year old ,well..I would challenge the doagnosis before worrying about treatment.

The only concrete way to make sure you actually have gout is to havefluid removed from the affected joint and that fluid has to show monosodium urate crystals that are visible under a microscope.

    Some further questions?

Are you still under atatck, if so where, which part of your body isbeing affected and how long has it been going on?

My diagnosis was made only by a blood test. I appreciate theinformation you have given me and I will be going to see anotherdoctor for a second opinion. I am still under attack although everyattack I’ve ever had has been in my hands. This has been going on forthe past 3 years. it was first diagnosed by one doctor as tendonitisbut I went to a new doctor about 2 weeks ago when the pain got to beto much to bare. before this i had just dealt with the pain as bestas i could. Like i’ve said before I understand how unlikely it is fora person my age to get this nevermind that i’m a female. And I thankyou for giving me this information.

this is done by some Dr.s as an easier(sometimes itis..at the time..next to impossible to get a fluid sample).Ask a Drif you can have some colchicine for the pain.Colchicine pretty muchonly works for gout pain.It is used for a few other things..butrarely..and not related to what your problem is.This will almost 100%REALLY upset you stomach..but if the pain does go..it is almost 100%gout.If the pain doesn’t go..it probablly isn’t gout

If the colchicine does work..hang out with us here!..Arnold..

Tendonitits diagnosis..not that uncommon for people with goutattacks in other areas in their feet..bones/tendons.

Attacks can and do occurr in the hands..much rarer.

If the attack is in your hands than it is probably not gout. Goutdoes affect the hands but not usually until it has ravaged the feet. The fact that you are female, 21 and do not have your first attack inyour big toe makes me suspect that doctor is reaching for the firstthing he can find which is, if your blood is high in urate it must begout.

Well, that is not the case and I doubt it again. I believe you are inpain and I also believe that your urate level is high. I just don’tbuy it is gout.

While I agree not to just label the attack gout without full investigation, I want to point out that it is only TYPICAL that gout attacks the big toe knuckles, arches, or ankles first.  Gout will also attack joints that have been damaged or are heavily used first (and more intensely) as well.

My gout did attack my feet, but shortly thereafter attacked everything else, and has never really flared up in my toe or arch again.  My most painful and damaging effects are in my wrists and knuckles- that’s where I have the majority of tophi. Gout mimics other conditions like a chameleon- carpal tunnel syndrome, rheumatoid arthritis, Lyme disease, Lupus, sprains, broken bones- anything that causes pain and inflammation in joints.  It takes a number of specific tests to pinpoint it sometimes, depending on where it occurs and what it mimics.  I have spent thousands of dollars on x-rays, MRI’s, CT scans, blood tests, urine tests, joint irrigations, you name it- all to end up at the same result, GOUT.
