Bad! colchicine experience(mine)..

That colchicine interferes..TO PUT IT MILDY..mutates..try thisone on.

I had been on allopurinol and colchicine for just over a year..2or 3 pills a day..or as little as possible..try 2..go up to 3 ifneccessary..use 5 in a day..but not for more than 3 days..then offfor a few days..back to the usual..I was given LONG ’scripts forcolchicne..typically 100 days..300 tablets.AND was THOROUGHLYLECTURED on it’s use. These were the instructions from therheumatologist..

One day..I felt the old gout..not bad..I was taking 2 colchicinea day..I let this attack ride..wasn’t that bad..BUT it got worse..notwanting to take any more of this dangerous drug than I absolutely hadto..I let this attack go on..well..it got to the point where I wasback to 3 pills a day..and the attack was getting worse..my feet gotsorer and sorer..and I found myself BACK in bed..more andmore..pretty soon I had to use the 3 colchince and 3 indomethicine..Iwas allowed to do this too.. This went on and on.ONLY getting worse for like 3 months..I couldbe on my feet..for like..6..then 5..then before I knew it..2 or 3 hrsa day.. A couple months of this..being on allopurinol..and onmaintenance colchicine..AND back on indomethicine..I had had aprevious GOOD! year..allopurinol,maintenance colchicine..all waswell..NOW I was almost back to where I was..crippled..BUT onallopurinol and colchicine and indomethicine..

Ok it was definitely time to get help..a few months of this wasenough..before I could blink I started to get a loss of feeling in myfingers..hands going to sleep..I had to SHAKE them to wake them up..alot..alrighty then something was wrong..very wrong.. Coincidentally..one day..I forgot to take the colchicine..and didnot have any with me..I was out..couldn’t get back for 6/7 hrs..I wasFREAKING OUT..PARANOID..just imagining the horrible attack that wouldcome..I got back home and got that colchicine into my FAST!..mentalrelief..about an hour later..BACK to the pain in my feet..??

This was last September..I had ended up being basically off myfeet for 23 hrs a day.. After a few days of this ..it suddennly dawned on me..my feetwere fine..(when I got up in the morning)UNTIL an hour after I tookthe evil colchicine..THEN I was back to the pain..and I tried thisover and over and over. SOooo I figured I would take it right before bed..hey this wascool..I was back walking!..BUT about an hour after taking it..andfalling asleep.I’ld wake up with pains in my feet.. I remember my first day without it..and no kidding..EVERY singletime I took it..BACK to the pain..so finally I quit.AND stayedaway..from colchicine..and all pain relief..and my feet werePURRFECT! for 4 months..(still on the allopurinol)(actually it’s nowbeen a year with no painkillers) When I saw the rhuematologist again..and told him..he said..YOUWERE OVERDOSING!..this brought a pretty nasty quick reply from me..Isaid..”I had gout attacks..and YOU told me to do this..SO I didit”..he said those were NOT gout attacks..and told me to never takecolchicine again.Idno..they sure felt like gout attacks to me.. Next came WEIRD..terrible feelings in my feet..almost as bad asgout..a feeling like there was stuff..activity..moving around in myfeet..like a mobile itch..that could not be scratched. This was so badthis needed a “see the expert NOW”..NOW..he said that this wasexcessive white blood cell activity..that was back tryingto “normalize/fix ” things..nerve ends,abrasions/irritations fromcrystals…AND.brought on by too much colchicine.. This was the kind of feeling that could seriously make one crazy.. It only lasted a few weeks..

I’dno about this colchicine..it was the only thing that workedfor me..and I was ever so grateful..then it took me almost right backto where I was..

Over my attack ?

Am I over my attack?

Well, I am no longer swallowing Ibuprofen as if itwere candy and I am no longer hobbling about by meansof a mop-handle and pool cue.

I’m still wearing only soft shoes and walking veryslowly and only short distances however.

Is this ‘over my attack’? I’m not sure. I’d like toget to the point where I can wear a dress shoe if I’dlike to. I’d like to get to the point where I can walkatleast one city block without feeling soreness in theballs of my feet. I’d like to be able to flex my greattoe.

I’m not sure if its over with or not. Its surely nolonger so inflammed or painful, but I’m sure not backto normal. Or perhaps I have to get used to a new”normal”. I don’t know if it gets back to what it usedto be or if it just subsides but you still can’t walkright.

You guys are right,, i am no doctor , but i feel i know my own body

better than anyone here. I have mentioned that I have never beendiagnosed gout 100 per cent .Because I didnt want to have a needlejammed into my sore ankle .My doctor put me on colchicine because shefelt it was gout also. What other conditions mimic gout and arerelieved by colchicine , purine free diet , and abstinence ofalcohol? Please educate me ? I say that sincerely. With no malice .Iget a liitle miffed , when teased .You have to admit. That the goutsufferers here arent cured ,and I feel a little closed mindedtowards anything the new kid has to say .My last painful attack ifyou believe I even suffer, I toughed it out without painkillers andcolchicine /allopurinol.. do you know how tough that is when it issitting right in front of you? My foot got big and sore . I noticedthat i could get limited relief from anti oxidents , peptids infresh apple s, herbals and teas,, all of which I thought would beless harmful than ,, well you know. I also felt as if my bodiesendorphines kicked back in.. but I know without a study,, medicineis out the window,,Scientists/doctors dont know why/ how colchicineworks .Scientists /dr dont know exactly what causesgout .Scientists/ and doctors know allopurinol regulates goutIs any of this correct. What I am looking for is a gout /purine /gluten/ autism(mercury poisoning from vaccines)connection.Thousands of parents are getting thier children well withDrs. who will listen to what they are saying . gluten is a proteinalso. Could Gluten be turned into purines and then to uric acid inthe bodies of gout sufferers?I am truly sorry if I have begrudged anyof you.If anyone has answers /theories lets hear it .Shut up andtake this is not the answer I’m seeking

Going on the a drug

Here we go, here we go I am about to go on Allopurinol

My case: Age 53. Goodish health, moderately unfit, no hypertension, not particularly overweight but heavy regular beer drinker (fourpints a day). Gout for five years at the rate of a couple of (what Inow call) minor attacks a year led to major attack at the start ofthis year lasting six weeks.

In my opinion the cause of the major attack was a) heavy two monthperiod of DIY associated with a new loft extension, b) stress causedby work to submit a big tender by end of the year and c) typicalbinge eating and drinking over Christmas.

In fact the six weeker was clearly not just one single attack ofgout, it was one attack after another with very short remissions inbetween.

GP tried high doses of Indomethacin (200 mg a day) to stop the cyclebut apart from fuzzing my brain it had little effect.

The specialist Consultant then stopped the cycle with 0.5 mgColchicine taken max three times a day along with the Indomethacin 50mg three times a day. This mix knocked the cycle out in 24 hours.

I had no side effects from the Colchicine though if you read thepotential side effects listed on the packet you would never touch thestuff. Keep taking this drug until you vomit, what sort ofinstruction is that ?

The only thing that I would say is that I think that Colchicine isjust holding off the gout. Every morning both my feet and anklesfeel (what I can only describe as) leaden. Not painful as such butjust difficult to walk until I do my regular morning exercises andthen it goes away.

My specialist, who I believe to be one of the best in the UK, willnot let me onto Allopurinol for at least a month. In the meantime heis monitoring my uric acid levels and liver enzymes. Hopefully Istart on Allopurinol at the end of this week.

All my reading about this drug is that it is highly beneficial withlots of GOOD side effects, especially to do with the cardio vascularsystem. Always look on the bright side of life !

I only wish that I had monitored this notice-board years ago andforced my GP to check out my hyperuricaemia properly WHEN I WASFEELING PERFECTLY WELL BETWEEN EARLY ATTACKS - and then get me ontothe A drug. I believe that the ONLY reason that they don’t do thisis COST (of which not enough comment appears on this notice board there must be armies of people out there who can’t afford this drugand who must be in lots of pain).

Whole foot is now swollen

Aftenot having a gout attack for about 2 years a few days ago I startedthis attack which has been much more painfull than before. I visitedmy Doctor who gave me a med called ARCOXIA its a NSAIDs drug. Thepain is a lot better now but my whole foot is swollen, not justaround the big toe. Is it normal for the wole foot to be swollen? oris this the effect of the drug?

Terminology

Gouty arthritis is arthritis caused by gout. That is,joint inflammation attributed to prior gout.

Gout is recurrent episodes of inflammation in thejoint, usually of the great toe, accompanied by highuric acid levels and the presence of sodium uratecrystals.

The main difference is that ‘gout’ is a condition withrecurrent episodes whereas ‘gouty arthritis’ is acondition with continual inflammation of the jointthat is no longe episodic in nature.

Is this a proper gout diagnosis?

An emergency room Dr. pronounced me with “Chronic gout”..WITHOUTseeing my feet..(coverred by a sheet)OR any other PART of me..WITHOUTseeing ANY medical history,WITHOUT ANY conversation with me..WHILE Iwas in laying there in agony!!!

I go to the horsepistol..tell the receptionist that I am inHORRIBLE/TERRIBLE AGONY!! in my foot..I think it is a goutattack..she just calls a Dr. and they wisk me away..a while later inwalks the TWIN for the “Man From Glad Garbage Bag” commercial..

He is BRUSQUE/NOT friendly/polite..has a bunch of other stuff inhis hands..and just says..”Yup..CHRONIC GOUT”..WITHOUT so much assaying hello/looking at me..

I LASH out at this MORON!..(ME..at the time great tree barklicker..NO allo. for me!!!)..”HOW DO YOU KNOW??? YOU HAVEN’T EVENLOOKED AT ME?????”

He turns to me..equally as quick/hostile and says..

“ANYONE who comes to a hospital emergency room..in the MIDDLE ofthe night..in the MIDDLE of the winter..in the MIDDLE of a RAGINGsnowstorm..in MINUS 20 degree weather..with one or two buttons on hisshirt done up CROOKED..his pants not done up/holding them up..NOSOCKS?..HOPPING/HOBBLING across the parking lot..after leaving hiscar running..having to stop and switch feet..take off a runningshoe..THEN hopping on the other foot while holding the othershoe..HAS CHRONIC GOUT!!..

Then he was REALLY,REALLY apologetic..and REALLY,REALLYNICE!!!!..admitting/conceding..and LAUGHING!!! LAUGHING???? HUNH???this is funny???????FUNNY????????…that him and a “FEW” others wereLAUGHING as they watched this on the security tape…he says theyREALLY liked the part where I was hopping on the one foot with theshoe..THEN I had to take that shoe off(The attack was “flashing” fromfoot to foot)because of the swelling..)I thought my foot would BURSTin that shoe(My feet used to swell from size 8 1/2 to WAY,WAY MORE!than 14/15..NO shoe/boot would fit)..THEN I was hopping CARRYING theshoe..like a little kid carrying a doll..

EVEN I SORT of laughed at the time..I laff a LOT about it now..myfriends..some in the medical proffession..and other people LOVE IT!!

Allopurinol and prozac

do these two drugs mix okay? does anyone have anyexperience as to whether it makes a difference toattacks ( i would assume that any difference would beworse attacks ,but you never know!)

Tendonitis and gout

Does anyone know if there is any relationship between the occurrenceor cause of tendonitis and those for gout?

In the last few years I have had the growing symptoms of gout. My GPpicked up on this straight away - when I got round to seeing him -and have been on 300mg of Allo for the past 6 weeks. However, aboutthe same time the gout was making itself felt I developed painfulinflammations in my both Achilles’ tendons. These made me look anarthritic old rooster walking on sharp stones when I get out of bedin the morning or if I sit still for more than an hour or so.

I noticed that the tendonitis seemed to come and go pretty much insync with a gout attack and wondered if the 2 were related in someway.

Futhermore

My buddy had a full blown crippling attack on allopurinol. I havesome but have not taken it . I hope I never have to .. But like anoldsaid ,, Its not rocket science ,,, thats good because the rocketscientists havent been able to figure it out ..the first recordeddisease on record and they havent a clue .Do You think the first guywho tried colchicine found a bottle of .5 mg tablets and said hmmm,,,No he probably dug the acorus bulb out of the ground .And I donteven know where allpurinol comes from.

During the plague some people probably said ” Fleas ? on Rats? Youare so full of shit mate!
